At the moment we’re observing the sunset sitting in front of our bungalow at Playa Blanca, a beech on one island in northern Colombia. Crabs are staring to come out of the Caribbean Sea to dig out holes – homes for the night.
This will be our second very warm night spent in a hammock under a straw roof of our bungalow. Hammocks are more comfortable than we thought, and provide a good protection against creepy crawlies. Today we’ve eaten a whole bunch of mangos and bananas, drank milk from coconuts. For diner we had a big fish straight from the ocean. After this paradise it will be hard to come back on-land tomorrow, but we’re flying to Panama in the afternoon, so we have to heading back to Cartagena.
The city of Cartagena was also a marvelous place to visit. We’ll not bore about the night life full of salsa, but just say that it was SUPER and with live music played by a Cuban band. The city’s old town is very nice to explore, although unbearably hot.
The best thing about the sun, however, was that it made all the funny creatures in the central park come out – monkeys and sloths, and most importantly iguanas! We’ve spent hours in that park chasing them: sloths, having a nap on a tree, moving so slowly, you hardly see them reaching out to get a bit of an eucalyptus leaf with the speed of the minute clock hand iguanas were so cool. Many of them become pets of the near food stalls. One big iguana (1.5m long including the tail) even got a name from the vendors – ‘Robert’. As here, as well as in Ecuador, everything is pronounced smaller, we made it Robercik
We quickly befriended Robercik with the help of a banana peel. Robercik loves to be tapped on the head covered with thick scale-like skin.
Robercik might be one of these cuties that I am NOT allergic to J, and could actually have as a pet. These reptiles can adjust their skin color to the surrounding. There were lots of monkeys that did not want our bread, but were crazy about the bananas we’ve brought. There were also some funny birds. However, Robercik beats them all.
The park really rocks! We are still wondering why “the Bible”, i.e., the Lonely Planet guidebook in the backpacker’s jargon, doesn’t mention a single word about this biblical paradise. Maybe that’s better for all the park inhabitants, as there are hardly any gringos during the day who otherwise would chase the animals like crazy (as we did
