We’ve decided to spend the remaining 3 days to our flight in an interesting port city of Valparaiso and a neighboring beach resort of Vina del Mar.
Valparaiso is surrounded by numerous hills covered with all sorts of houses, built out of wood, stones, tin and even clay. Urbanistically, they are governed by one underlying principle: the higher the poorer, however more ventilated and less smelly. There are about a dozen of historical steel elevators scattered around the city, all of which were built about 100 years ago. Eight of these interesting constructions function to this date, transporting people from various piazzas at the city bottom to their houses perched up high on the steep slopes of the surrounding mountains. These houses form a colorful patchwork, which goes well with the colorful containers waiting in the port to be transported.
The port itself is a big, noisy and moving machinery that cuts deep into the city. Maciek spent more than one hour staring blankly at this living organism. Thanks to the unified system of containers loaded onto the enormous ships and trucks, all our Christmas presents can get oversees in time.
