Dakar

photos

The famous Paris-Dakar race, as the name suggests, begins and ends in Buenos Aires. At least this year. It happened to be crossing not far from us in the city of San Juan, Argentina, so we decided to check it out.

The entire experience was rather disappointing. First, it is forbidden to go directly in the field to see the racers making their way through sand dunes or other obstacles. Only very strictly guarded areas at the start and finish are open to public. Moreover, in our case, the finish line we wanted to get to was located several kilometers from the place where regular cars and buses were allowed. That was way too far for us, mainly due to the killing Sun (the day before it was 42 degrees). We only managed to see a couple of race cars heading towards their camp (where, needless to mention, we had no access either).

To sum up, this “sport” is for spectators in front of TV, not on the spot.

No, I have a comment after all. Paris-Dakar race is like “around the world” trip, which takes place around Mendoza.
