Perito Moreno Glacier

(photos)

Forget Swiss Aletsch or French Merde Glace (I meant Mer de Glace) on the slopes of Mont Blanc! The glacier Perito Moreno knocked our socks off! It is a 5km wide, 30km long, river of ice. More importantly, it ends directly in a lake, in a form of a 60m tall wall of ice. To make it even more attractive, Perito Moreno is alive – it moves up to two meters per day. As a result, huge chunks of ice regularly fall off and splash into the water. Needless to mention that Mother Nature located a big round peninsula just opposite this ice wall, creating a perfect observation point for the ongoing spectacle.

Although you visit this site together with loads of gelled-hair and high-heel tourists, it is still a must-see (like Machu Picchu in Peru). Interestingly, you can take your time before visiting it – in contrast to most glaciers nowadays, Perito Moreno is stable (not retreating). And, it is not the biggest icecream in the area – just the most accessible one.
