More Belize, please!

photos

After a tiring day in Tikal, we fully deserved a relaxing week on a laidback Caribbean island (again). This time it was Key Caulker, an exceptionally beautiful hill sticking its head out of the Caribbean. But is there any island on the Caribbean that is not beautiful? The deep colors of turquoise blues, indigos and misty lazur make the scene pleasant for the eye.

Here you don’t necessarily have to dive to see the pearls of the Belizean barrier reef. Magnificent sting rays and ‘friendly’ sharks come up to a boat full of snorkelrs as soon as the anchor is dropped. The captain throws them a couple of sardines and the gringos watch underwater. Some even volunteer to touch the nurse sharks.

Key Caulker, unlike Utila or Roatan, is not all about diving. There is lots of other stuff to do. For instance Adam and Greg took a few hours of kite crash course, and Greg already claimed that he’s discovered his new favorite sport. He got the grip of it really fast. We’ve also been with the guys a couple of times underwater for some scuba dives, unfortunately in bad visibility conditions, but the dives turned out to be more about buoyancy control (or rather uncontroll) than exploring the aquatic life. Both of them were eating through their air SO fast that the dives had to be finished before planned.

The life’s pace on Key Caulker is really slow. Laidback and relaxed. You can even find signs saying “Go slow”. The locals take it seriously. Very recently, i.e., in 1960ies, there was a strong hurricane that split the island into two. Some nice buildings nearby are still under renovation….

Adam, Greg, thanks again for the wonderful time spent together! We REALLY enjoyed the time spent with you. Moreover thanks for your flexibility and helping us out on the last extra day with the chase of our flight connection to Santiago through Cancun and spontaneous redirecting our route to Mexico. Had so much fun with you guys!
