Nicaragua

photos

Nicaragua has the largest lake (Lake Nicaragua) in Central America, with fresh water sharks and Ometepe, a double-volcano island in the middle.

Unfortunately, it turned out that the sharks are on the verge of extinction due to overfishing, and the water in the lake is polluted in some areas. On a ferry we took to Ometepe, they were showing a pro-ecology movie about the area, and, at the same time, the locals were throwing empty plastic bottles straight to the water. We had often seen it before on the buses, but somehow the trash disposed directly to the water hurts more. It turned us off quite a bit. Especially Marta, who didn’t want to swim in the lake and claimed that the sand on the beach was black because of dirt (the real reason was its volcanic origin). So we quickly decided to change the island to one in Honduras, on the Caribbean, surrounded by coral reefs. We will cover it in another post. On the way north, still in Nicaragua, we only stopped for two days in Granada, a beautiful colonial city with an extensive backpacker infrastructure. This city would be even nicer if only they weren’t dumping their sewage directly in the Nicaragua Lake, making the waterfront a rather unpleasant area. What a pity.

Marta, happy birthday to you, happy birthday to you, happy birthday dear Marta, happy birthday to you and many happy returns. There is a lot of confusion with this term Granada, probably this one in Spain was the first one though it had some other names previously, and some say Grenada, which in turn is in the island, but all in all it is also a title of a beautiful song by Violetta Villas in two versions Polish and Spanish, I like the Spanish one, it`s so vibrant so I dedicate it to you.All the best.
