Giant Potato Cod

photos

Great Barrier Reef diving safari from Cairns was, as the name suggests, great. Definitely the best underwater sites I’ve seen so far. Hard to name all the fish, corals, sponges and creatures that live there; just have a glimpse at the pics.  Giant clams, octopus, the friendly tamed potato cod (probably the most photographed and facebooked cod on the planet), loads of sharks, different types of Nemo (clownfish) in their wavy Anemone (so photogenic as these fish can’t actually leave their grassy homes and when the camera closers up, they just jiggle around in despair)… and simply loads of colorful swimming creatures.

The week spent on the boat turned out to be splendid, great crew and fellow divers, delicious food. The company chosen with big hesitation turned out to employ people truly devoted to their work. One of them was a talented chef de la cuisine, Ruben, who managed to prepare at least 3 fancy dishes accompanied by a few different salads, at least 3 times a day, with variations for carnivores, vegetarian, vegan etc, fruit plates and deserts. On the whole, when we did not dive we ate, when we did not eat we dived, this would be the best description of our life on the luxurious yacht. Moreover, there was a brave and ingenious photographer and camera operator, Ben, who always reached the most spectacular curiosities of underwater world, noticed the unnoticeable and documented the most dangerous activities, like the ferocious shark feed, gigantic cod taming, etc. His camera in a solid steel housing landed frequently in the shark’s jaws, but after the main movie shooting, we only collected broken shark teeth from the filming site. Ben himself always managed to return to the boat in one piece.

The boat was sometimes rocking like hell, pushing us off our beds and unpacking our luggage during the night. I’ve never before been so drugged with sea-sickness pills. However, must admit, they work.

Giant potato cod rules! If you’re not afraid, glimpse through the pics!

guys – those underwater pics are awesome – while seeing them, you really want to jump into the water – the only problem is that even if you’ve jumped into the Gdynia’s Oceanarium you could never see all those colors !!

greets from gray and rainy Gdańsk !
